Ning in Education

Using Ning for Educational Social Networks

Hi all,

Has anyone given any thought to have an acceptable use policy on their Ning website? I am releasing a network to a group of medical students on Monday and thought it would be sensible to add some terms of use but not too sure about how extensive it should be. Really want to keep it simple but want to cover my back also as the buck stops with me.

Thoughts?

AUP's are really important. Unfortunately is seems that no one has figured out a way of getting anyone to actually read them. I would suggest that the first task that the group get is to come up with agreed community guidelines (for a good example - see Flickr's: http://www.flickr.com/guidelines.gne ) - give them links to other service guidelines and AUPs for background research. This way you may be able to create meaningful and community agreed and created guidelines while supporting your learners digital literacy skills. You can also work backwards from this to fill in any gaps - make sure you are clear about what your additional responsibilities are as a community owner - both in terms of your legal duties and institutional expectation.

Good luck! J.
