Ning in Education

Using Ning for Educational Social Networks

Anyone doing green projects in your classes or schools? I'm sponsoring the "Blue Planet Society" at my school where students organize and produce recycling once a week from classes and offices.

I am considering doing an integrated project with the theme "earth day every day" with three other classes (1st -3rd). We haven't decided on the details yet. We generally let the kids lead us in their direction. But there is SO much we could possibly do. I'd love to know what others have done/are doing.

Hello, I joined this group to share ideas about incorporating sustainable practices and "green living" concepts with students and teachers. In my pre-k-6 school, we have student council members from different upper grade levels in charge of weekly recycling collection from all classrooms - we teachers have waste paper bins, and mixed plastic/glass/aluminum/metal bins as well.
Last year, our school showcased a "green living" theme for a schoolwide science night. In my grade level, third, I was able to have a parent volunteer who works in the county park service present a rain barrel construction demonstration. The kids really thought it was a very logical idea to harvest waste runoff rainwater from thunderstorms and store it in big barrels for later use in watering gardens and such - so two of the "demo" barrels became school property, for our use!
I am a big proponent of "re-using" materials anyway, always have talks with my students about what you can do with something when it is used up instead of throwing it away - discussions we have such as composting scraps for gardens, saving your not-so-worn out clothes for your baby brother, etc etc come to mind.

Anyway, I'm glad to be here! Look forward to sharing ideas, lessons, etc....especially would like techno-teaching ideas since I have a Smartboard and Notebook 10 now.

I love to see so many educators excited about saving the environment. Every day I talk to my students about the importants of reducing and reusing. I sometimes forget not everyone recycles. In my mind, everyone does it, then remember not everyone believes in this practice. I try to give my students examples of how reducing waste can help our animals, this allows for a concrete example vs. global warming.
I am planning to spend the day outdoors on Earth Day, and am trying to come up with an art project for my middle schoolers, any suggestions?

Hi Tanya

I am one of the Eco Champions where I work at the International Education Division of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
I am find the young people I work with are keen and eager to get on board; however those my age are quite challenging.
I believe if they listened to all the Grandchildren they might learn and change. Any suggestions?

Cheers Pam
