Hi Brian,
The school administrator doesn't believe in collaboration.
His thinking is olden day thinking-"If you get to close to a
person with a disability, I might catch it". It is so sad that
people still have that type of thinking towards people with
disabilities.

I know about students that have parents addicted to meth.
The impact is so long lasting. It is so sad. I had a couple of
students in the past, whose parents were meth dealers and
users. They kept going through withdrawls. It was so sad, because
there was nothing that I could do.
RTI are very helpful to help students make progress.
I know that Bob, has asked if I would help develop a
RTI link on his Enabling Foundation. I told Bob when I
had the time I would do it. If you want to help Bob, please feel free
to help.

Hope all is well,
Take Care,
Ann

Hi Brian,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. Busy, busy!
I am working with students that have learning disabilities. I have two that I am pay more attention to then others. These two students come from a very abusive household, yet law enforcement refuses to do anything. Both of them have given up on life and school. They are showing very serious behavior problems at very young ages 9 and 6. I am hoping that when the parents go to court to finalize their divorce that the father, will get the kids. He seems to care and is worried about them. He has tried to get them into therapy, but mom has refused.
Collaborating with others is out of the picture, since the administration feels that there needs to be a separation between the regualar and special ed students. It is sad, because each can learn from the other.

Hope you aren't working to hard.

Take Care,
Ann

Hi Brian,

That is so interesting about Wasatch Jr. High. My mom started the self-contained LD classroom in the 80's. Joyce Barnes head of special education was a friend of my mom's, Her daughter and I were friends. Small world because I would go and help out in her class and Sally (?) room also,.

I wish that summer didn't have to end. I enjoy my time off catching up on my reading and all those other task that I don't get around to during the year.

Hi Brian-

LaVerkin is growing. I don't know when you left Utah, but the whole St. George area is almost as large as the Provo area.
I went to the UofU for my undergraduate degree.
What did you teach in Granite District?

Hi Brian,

With your interest in Education Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording you might find of interest.

The Hidden Opportunity of Fall Break - the reset button!

Ahhh, Fall Break... the weather's changing... you've had a moment to breathe, maybe read a novel, listen to some relaxing tunes, travel the world (through the internet) and sleep! You're rejuvinated and ready for 2 more months of school until winter break.

But, the reality of your situation is this - the students have had one to two weeks off as well. Do you think the majority of them took a moment to breathe, read a novel, listen to some relaxing tunes, travel the world? No, many of them staye… Continue

The Power of Positive Energy - FEEDING Rules and Power Praise Phrase

Some years ago I had the most blessed opportunity to work with a school in an area of high generational poverty in a mid-west city. Nearly all of the students were black. Over the years the children got to know me and I grew to love them. When I walked on the campus many of the students would catch my eye and break into a giant smile. The mutual love and respect was not originally present, however. It took time and consistent, persistent, unconditional effort on my part to win their hearts and m… Continue

The 5/5 Rule

I teach graduate level ground-courses at The University of Phoenix. One of my favorites is courses with students preparing to be teachers... they are filled with energy, optimism, and a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. I emphasize to them the importance of classroom management. One of the basics is the 5/5 rule.

The 5/5 rule addresses the first and last five minutes of their class time. Here's how it works. If a teacher can capture the first five minutes of every c… Continue

August - Stormy or Sunny? Its your choice.

“8:30 am ~ With resolute eyes, she stares at the door, waiting for the inevitable. The distant sound of a tornado is drawing closer with each passing beat of her heart. The sound becomes deafening as she approaches the door to meet the monster head-on. She reaches for the cold steel of the handle and is propelled backwards as the tornado rips into the room blowing past her in a terrifying rush. Furniture is tossed aside; paper is thrown about as the tornado settles into a horrific windstorm.
