I really respect your work, Frank, and I have cited your state standards website in my thesis. Your Media Literacy Clearinghouse has so many great lesson ideas for teachers, especially ones just beginning to teach media literacy. You saved my career…

I found that introducing the CORE CONCEPTS and CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS, followed by relevant examples from youth media and popular culture are best for my purposes. Should you have questions, send them to me directly. Email: fbaker1346@aol.com

I agree. When I taught Political Science and U.S. History to high school students I always started the class with the news summary from the previous evenings Lehrer Newshour. In U.S. history we tied historical events to current events. In Political…

Samatha,
We started our ACCESS (A Caring Community Empowering Student Success) program after visiting Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire, IL 60069 (847) 415-4000. They have developed an extensive student leadership program, a portion of which involves mentoring Freshmen. We took what we learned from our field trip to the school and then crafted our own program. Our student demographics are different than Stevensons and we needed to address those differences. All Leyden Freshmen are required to attend ACCESS which meets from 2:35 to 3:05 at the end of the school day. The Freshmen are assigned to a small ACCESS group that is lead by one faculty member and two Teen Leaders. We have an ACCESS coordinator who develops the schedule and the lessons. The goal is to empower the Teen Leaders to run the ACCESS period with the teacher as attendance taker and back up. Training for the Teen Leaders occurrs during the summer. Teen Leaders recieve special privilages as a reward for their work. Teachers are compensated financially. For more informationon on our program feel free to contact Madame Lisa Nordmeyer (French teacher) who is our ACCESS Coordinator. Her e-mail address is LNordmeyer@leyden212.org or by phone at 847-451-3000. She is extraordinarily creative and enthusiastic and I think you'll find talking with her quite valuable. We've been running the program for several years and have worked out many kinks. I know that I see substantial growth in the students who become Teen Leaders and, for the most part, they are happy with their experience. I hope you find this information helpful.

Hi Carolyn -
I saw your post about the work that seniors do with freshmen at your school. Would you be willing to share a program overview or job description. I am curious about the work that the seniors do directly with the 9th graders - how much time do they have, what topics do they cover, etc. Thank you!
