We use a fake email address such as the school login name@nospam.com this way they reduce the possibility of someone getting their email address. I learned through this group that they can use the gmail trick which I think I will use in the future. It will send any mail sent to them to my account so I can preview it. My students do not have email priviledges until the are in high school.
I see you have submitted a membership request. Email me a link to your school and explain what position you have, so I have it on record. I have to check the school site for verification. After that I can approve you. Sorry for the inconvenience but safety first.
My students login using a school login. Something like 14hbyer. This lets me know who they are and in what class they are located. I also use the Ning site to post homework, the syllabus, the objectives, and have the student turn in their work. I was going to have them turn in their work over the school network but it is not reliable. After I grade the work I send it to the students individual page and post their feedback in their private inbox. I have many students whos parents want to be members just to check on the kids. I allow it if I know who the parent is or they give me heads up. The site is limited to educational personel, students and parents. We are getting ready to post some videos of our preamble contest. I don't allow applications like poke buddy because this makes the site run slow and violates our user policy. I also don't allow music. Videos are only allowed if they are related to school. As a motivator I allow students to create groups, and control how their pages look. I don't allow first names, addresses, or any ASL information. Photos cannot contain a student or family members face.

Hi Mike,
With your work in Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording you might find of interest.
Welcome to the community for those using Ning to power their educational social network. Also be sure to check out Classroom 2.0 for general discussions of Web 2.0 in the classroom.
Please introduce yourself in the "Introductions" forum post. And to see a list of Ning networks being used in education (or to add yourself!), please visit Social Networks in Education.
