Hi Elise! I do have a facebook account. I opened it so I could email who I thought might be the daughter of an old childhood friend of mine (she was). I haven't looked at it since. How do you use facebook?
I think Ning grabbed my attention because of its interest group format. I am exploring different technologies I might be able to use in the classroom, and stumbled upon Ning. The education group is what brought me in personally, got me interested in the program for myself as well as for my students.
I still don't get the navigation system! It seems like my comments are all over the place, and I have way too many "My Page" sections. Also, I don't quite get how a group is different from a ring- I get that it is a sub set, but I'm not sure what the differences are. Oh well : ), I'll learn as I go.
The grade levels you teach are my favorites. I'm hoping we can make our elementary group space a fun place to visit, built upon our elementary teacher sensibilities. It seems the other rings or forums or threads I have participated in have been prone to arguing, everything is presented in an "I agree/ I don't agree" format. That's ok, but it's also draining. It makes me focus and articulate my thoughts more, which is good, but so far I haven't gotten much else out of those discussions.
Finding new resources has been the best part, for me, of Ning. I'm hoping I can fall into or help create a genuinely supportive teaching community as well.
I think things will pick up in the elementary group when Ning ok's its use in elementary classrooms. I hope that will be coming soon.
Do you use Ning in your classroom? Do you use other internet technology, such as wikis, blogs, message boards, etc? I just noticed your class blogmeister link, I will go take a look. I tried to set up a class blogmeister account so I could test it, but Portland Public Schools doesn't have a school code. I wrote to David directly, but he hasn't written me back yet.
Here's to a long and warm professional friendship for our elementary group!
Welcome to the community for those using Ning to power their educational social network. Also be sure to check out Classroom 2.0 for general discussions of Web 2.0 in the classroom.
Please introduce yourself in the "Introductions" forum post. And to see a list of Ning networks being used in education (or to add yourself!), please visit Social Networks in Education.
