Thursday 6 December
I'm still on a high and can't stop smiling about it.
I'm so proud - I just keep walking around saying 'I'm so proud'
'So professional'
On Thursday my ESL students presented their 'How to catch Public Transport' Showcase to the University community. It was a real triumph in so many ways. The presenters spoke confidently, clearly and with a real enthusiasm. They rose to the occasion to use an old cliche. Our technology managers controlled the equipment seamlessly - all giving signals to each other to indicate what needed to be done. The ushers welcomed everyone in the most beautiful way - we had people telling us after how wonderful the ushers were. And the audience loved the students shows. They clapped loudly and laughed at the blooper reels at the end of the movies. Teachers told us how they'd use the DVD in class because it was so clear and useful.
Of course I was really emotional when I gave my speech at the end. How could I not be given what the students had achieved. Students who had little or no experience with multimedia prior to early this year. As I said, they were an inspiration to us all and especially to their community. Our audience could see other people from their community as leaders here - showcasing their skills and talents.
Afterwards the students were buzzing with excitement. They were on a high and it lasted and lasted - even into Fridays class when were looking at the photos and video we shot. They even mingled with the guests as I encouraged them to do. In fact so much of what I'd emphasised throughout the year was in evidence throughout - especially confidence - supporting each other - quality control. Another teacher said how it was so obvious the degree of language work involved and to achieve this calibre of show doesn't just happen - it takes much work. There was a cohesion here in so many ways.
Ah the buzz....these are the occasions when I know why I teach...and these are the moments to really treasure through the times of doubt and frustration.
