Yesterday I showed the students my personal ning page with the class videos section. I've made the videos 'just for pals' to ensure their security so only a few people can see them. They were so excited when they saw the few comments there especially knowing that they were from teachers in other parts of the world. Very big smiles all around.
On a different note, we also watched some interviews the students had shot the previous week at our Showcase (How to Catch Public Transport). I wanted them to critically assess the footage - in terms of light, sound and framing - which we hadn't done before. It really demonstrated to me the power of having footage that was relevant to them, and also the importance of teaching the vocabulary for discussing such. Even after a short time they were using the specialist language to give their opinion on what they saw. They then went out and shot some more spoken pieces to camera putting their knowledge into action. I want to use more of this approach in the coming new year - bringing in the cycle of ongoing critical evaluation and application of knowledge and then critical evaluation once more.
