The complete
GRE exam schedule comprises various stages right from
GRE registration,
GRE prep, applying to Universities with your GRE scores and receiving acceptance from a university.
You can plan your GRE exam timeline only after you are familiar with all the stages. This will allow you to allocate proper time for both GRE prep and for applying to Universities as well. It won’t be wrong to say that the GRE battle is won if you have a good GRE exam timeline in place!
Here is a sample
GRE exam timeline, for a student applying in Fall 2010:
August ’09
Register for the GRE exam. It would be good to schedule the
GRE exam appointment around mid-October. Start preparing for the exam right away. Don't postpone your GRE prep for later, as you simply won't have time.
September ’09
Focus on GRE Prep, giving the required focus to each
GRE section. Take as many online GRE tests as possible. This will help you get the right temperament for the GRE exam.
October ‘09
Write the GRE exam. Depending on when you are done with the GRE exam, you can take it easy for a while. In case you don’t like your GRE score, then you can take the GRE exam again. However, you should know that rescheduling the GRE exam can delay your applications.
November ’09
Create a shortlist of potential universities based on your
GRE score and prepare documents for each university. You can choose appropriate colleges, by doing research on earlier cut-off GRE score, for admission offers.
Start preparing the SoP(Statement of Purpose), LoRs (Letter of Recommendations), academic transcripts and other documents to be sent to the university.
November-December ’09
Send your application to the universities. This sounds easier than it actually is. The whole process is time consuming, and you will spend a lot of time tracking your applications, with crossed fingers.
Feb-March ’10
Wait for the acceptance letter from the universities.
May -June ‘10
Once you have your acceptance letter, start preparing for the Visa application. In case you need financial support, now would be high time to get the necessary funds in place.
The most critical part of this process is doing well in the
GRE exam.
