Google Docs and Pages Hack

Just discovered you can embed google docs into pages created with the pages tab. Once done anyone you invite can edit the page.
Heres a screen print from my site - obviously a couple of you won't understand the Hebrew :-) but that's really unimportant. In the middle of the screenprint you can see the script for creating the iframe embed where the print is red, you would add your document URL. Simple way to set up onsite collaborative docs. (click on the pic to see full size - in order to see the script)

Glad you like it! A couple of things to take note of (discovered after making this post). If you or other collaborators are signed in to google docs when browsing to the page, it will open already in edit mode. The save button and automatic save work well. Clicking on "Save & Close" will transfer the person to their google docs account, thus taking them away from your site. (now going to check if the google presentations can be added in same way)

Susan,

So does this mean I can toss scribd?

LOL!

as to scribd - I suppose it depends on the reason for using it, I like the fact that you can get an mp3 of the text.

Where do you get code from google docs to paste in? Trying and failing

I'm not sure if this still works with the new version of Ning, if you succeed I'd love to know!

How to get the link to your google page:
When you publish a google doc you get a link - see 3 stages in pic below
Then you create iframe code as seen in original post above and paste the link into it - instead of the red text.

Worked in a page:

http://education.ning.com/page/page/show?id=1027485%3APage%3A34820

Here is the code: [left angle bracket]iframe src="http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcd265zv_2779mx8z35j" width="650" height="500"[right angle bracket][left angle bracket]/iframe[right angle bracket]

Replace the bracket indications with real brackets.

Tried in a "note" and didn't seem to work.

Hey Steve, that was quick!

I read on networkcreators that pages is going to become an option in the features panel. I wonder if they are going to change the way it works, being able to add html is very useful sometimes, as in the above example.

Susan,

Timely update on this discussion and I'm going to look into this. We just put Wikis onto EFL Classroom 2.0. The neat thing with it is you can share pages outside the network, no signin necessary. Teachers can make a wiki and stay on the site.... Great tool and I just couldn't keep waiting nor was the "Notes" feature anything that I considered collaborative or that useful.....

But I want to look into embedding the google doc page into our site. So that members can make docs without having to go off the network. It would be great if Ning made page creation easy but I don't see how they would be able to make that an option or at least a "free" option....

I'm going to experiment with Steve's code this morning and I'll give you an update! Shalom Susan and check out some of the new stuff on EFL Classroom ..... I know you'll like it and I'll be sending out a member email as soon as I make a screencast introducing the new features/look.
